Democracy, U.S. Middle East Policy, and the Limits of World Order, P. Seeberg (ed.): EU and the Mediterranean. Foreign Policy and Security. University Press of Southern Denmark 2007
Innocence Lost. Islamism and the Battle over Values and World Order. Odense. University Press of Southern Denmark 2007. 194 pages:
Innocence Lost is another fine contribution by Lars Erslev Andersen, one of Europe's best informed scholars on the West and contemporary Muslim societies. He offers an incisive, provocative and timely analysis not only of the Danish cartoon affair but of the profound challenges of our times, namely the pressing need for a course of dialogue and de-escalation in the approach of western countries to the Muslim world. He aptly warns against a reprise to the logic of religious war and argues that a key answer lies in the West, and not least the United States, being true to its own core principles including justice and equality
Augustus Richard Norton, Boston University. Professor in the Departments of International Relations and Anthropology. He is presently a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies in Cairo
This new study is an extraordinary survey and up-to-date account of the very real tensions that today mark the relations between the US-led West and the Muslim Middle East. Its great value is not only its wide ranging coverage but also putting such episodes as the Œcartoons¹ crisis into a proper analytical perspective. A great little study
Anoush Ehteshami, Durham University. Professor, BA (Hons) in Social Sciences, PhD in Politics. Head of School in the School of Government and International Affairs and member of the Centre for Iranian Studies. He is furthermore Special Advisor to the Islamic Criminal Justice Project in the Centre for Criminal Law and Criminal Justice
Innocence Lost is a concise and incisive analysis of the disintegration of the Middle East and the role of the United States, above all, in contributing to its current chaos. Lars Erslev Andersen, one of Europe¹s leading international security and Middle East experts, begins with the Danish cartoon controversy and masterfully surveys the competing trends of radical Islamism and American neoconservatism, bent as they are on a collision course that has turned Huntington¹s ³clash of civilizations² thesis into a self-confirming prophecy. He shows how liberal political reform, contaminated by its neoconservative patrons, has failed to take root in Iraq and Lebanon, and in the other authoritarian regimes of the region; and how the festering Palestine problem has exacerbated the region¹s grim condition. Let us hope that his insightful account will be read beyond Denmark and Europe there are valuable lessons in it for Middle Easterners and Americans too.

With Søren Hove og Morten Valbjørn: Nye Kolde Krige i Mellemøsten. USA's mellemøststrategi, situationen i Golfen og forandringer i den arabiske offentlighed. Odense. Syddansk Universitet 2007. 118 pages:
In 2006, the state of affairs in Iraq was the worst since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003, with inter-
sectarian warfare and violence forming the overriding order of the day. In spite of a February 2007 agreement between
Hamas og Fatah to form a coalition government, a civil war among Palestinians still seems imminent, and not much
hope is attached to peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The war in July of 2006 in Lebanon
between Israel and Hezbollah left Lebanon in a state in which civil war seems imminent and Israel with an urgent need
for a new security policy strategy.
In the United States, criticism of the Middle East policy of the George W. Bush administration has become one of the mot prominent political themes. After the war in Lebanon the U.S. government, with Condoleezza Rice as main architect, has revised the U.S.' Middle East strategy. The book analyses the new American strategy as a New Cold War, which through new alliances seeks to increase the pressure on Iran.
The relationship between society and state in the Middle East has, through war and changes in Arab public life, undergone dramatic changes. The role of the Arab Gulf in regional politics has increased I significance, and a new conflict between Sunnis and Shias is widely assumed to be in the making.
The book analyses these tendencies and the perspectives they present for the Middle East, taking as its point of departure the Old Arab Cold War, the New Arab Cold War and that which, as a designation for U.S. Middle East strategy after the Lebanese war, is termed a New Cold War in the Middle East.

Dr. Rohan Gunaratna, Singapore, 2005. Rohan Gunaratna is Head of the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research at the Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies, Singapore, and Senior Fellow, Combating Terrorism Centre at the United States Military Academy at West Point:
The authors present a rich history that enables both the generalists and the specialists to understand the politico-religious ideology that drives the contemporary jihadists to kill and die. They discuss in detail, the formation of that powerful belief system, the key ideologies, the financing, the training, and most importantly, the terrorist. The two pivotal events that led to the formation of the contemporary Jihad networks - first, their defining Afghanistan experience and second, the international neglect of Afghanistan - are chronicled. The perception of the political leaders, bureaucrats and the public to the emerging threat including the intervention of Afghanistan and the strategic arguments for the invasion of Iraq are discussed…In this important work, Aagaard and Andersen provide the background information, both the understanding and the knowledge for the West to formulate and develop response beyond operational counter terrorism…I recommend this important work for both the generalist and the specialist
Joshua Sinai, program manager for counterterrorism studies & education at The Analysis Corporation in The Washington Times, February 12, 2006:
In the Name of God: the Afghan Connection and the U.S. War against Terrorism: The Story of the Afghan Veterans as the Masterminds Behind 9/11 by Lars Erslev Andersen and Jan Aagaard, is an especially noteworthy book because it reveals how completely unjustified is the violence currently sweeping the Islamic world against Denmark over a series of cartoons that do not reflect what are generally positive Danish views on Islam and the need to resolve Middle East problems.
Mr. Andersen, a professor of Middle East studies at the University of Southern Denmark, and Mr. Aagaard, a counterterrorism case officer and analyst in the Danish Security Intelligence Service, argue that while many terror attacks have been prevented in the United States and Europe due to heightened preparedness and police cooperation, the motivation to join al Qaeda type networks is strong because "the 'war on terror' has consisted of military action and not of a will to solve the political problems on which terrorism subsists."
Such sound policy recommendations are accompanied by a pragmatic definition of terrorism as "planned violence targeting civilians or forces that are not in battle," a discussion, although too brief, of the presence in Denmark of some Islamic radicals with ties to terrorist groups, its explanation of Islamic fundamentalism as a reaction to modernity and secularization and the worldwide networked nature of groups such as al Qaeda.
The book's importance lies in the insights it reveals about Danish attitudes towards terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism, and its constructive approach to resolving the problems underlying terrorism
